GLP-1 medications, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, are used in the treatment of weight loss and type 2 diabetes. They mimic the action of the natural GLP-1 hormone, stimulating insulin release, inhibiting glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting a feeling of fullness. There have been some recent discoveries of GLP-1s and cardiovascular benefits. More research is being conducted.
While no substance is risk-free, these medications are safe in patients who meet criteria to take them. GLP-1 medications have been on the market since 2005.
Duration of treatment is dependent on the desire of weight one wants to lose. Patients are typically prescribed Semaglutide/Tirzepatide for three months or longer. Duration can be discussed with your provider as treatment plans vary from patient to patient. Some patients may need life-long treatment.
Semaglutide is for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30 or a BMI greater than 27 accompanied by medical problems such as high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Semaglutide and Tirzepatide is not approved for those who have a past medical history or family medical history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Semaglutide and Tirzepatide is not approved for individuals with a past history of an allergic reaction to the medication or if you have a diagnosis of Type I Diabetes.
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. Rarely, a more serious complication such as pancreatitis may occur from taking these medications.
